West Camino Cielo begins a half-mile below the crest of San Marcos Pass. Leading across the rugged and extremely remote western portion of the Santa Ynez Mountains, it snakes its way across a series of bony spines and high prominences for 17 miles to Refugio Pass where it ends. For five miles the road is paved, and the going seems easy, but just beyond the entrance to a private gun club, the road abruptly turns to dirt and begins a series of sharp downhill switchbacks that seem to lead backward in time to a frontier era in which the mountain wall dominated human attempts to intrude upon the wilderness interior. To get the flavor of what travel might have been like three-quarters of a century ago, take an afternoon and drive from San Marcos Pass to Santa Ynez Peak along West Camino Cielo. It is rough and bumpy, and there are lots of potholes and plenty of places for you to curse me for taking my advice, but it is well worth your time. Most likely you won’t meet anyone on the entire 15-mile drive and you won’t see sprawls of tract homes dotting the valley below. Only rarely will you see either Highway 101 or the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. You can go there for a tasting or bring a bag lunch and purchase wines by the glass. Next, go over bridge for about 2mi you will pass beautiful old oaks . at the next bridge keep going to next bridge then park off of road where you can . then walk for about a mile or more. There are 7 bridges if you feel like going the entire way. This is truly the most beautiful scenic walk in the valley. You will experience the most famous ranches and see cattle and other wildlife, at one time this land belonged to the famous movie star and cowboy, Jimmy Stewart.. On way back I suggest you go to Roblar vineyard 3mi to the north then Bridlewood minutes away .bring picnic lunch in the park center of the horse track. Join us at our peaceful, private and secluded home and vineyard between Solvang and Santa Ynez. Explore everything the Santa Ynez Valley has to offer within a few minutes drive or just hang out by the beautiful 30' pool and spa. Find your own quiet spot to relax: there's a 1000 sqft covered patio with seating, a separate dining terrace and a bocce court on our two-acre estate. The house is surrounded by paddocks, giving a unique, and tranquil setting for your perfect getaway. We are one of a few fully legal short-term rentals in Santa Barbara county, we are fully permitted and pay all Transient Occupancy Taxes due. The space: Please note this is a shared house, although your rooms are private and have unique entrances. Your two rooms are newly decorated to a high standard, both with en suite bathrooms and their own private entrances that lead out to the front pool area, both are lockable from the inside. The first bedroom has extra coffee facilities, refrigerator, 50" TV, DVD player, a wardrobe, iron and ironing board. The shared main living space boasts a vaulted wood beam ceiling throughout, plentiful seating for relaxed TV viewing, a dining room for six and lowered seating and real log fire area for those cooler evenings. The fully equipped kitchen includes a full gas stove, dishwasher, blenders, dishes and glasses, as well as a washer and dryer on request. Your main room has a refrigerator for any snacks (and wine!) We have lots of parking space within the grounds. We are one of a few fully legal short-term rentals in Santa Barbara county, we are fully permitted and pay all Transient Occupancy Taxes due. Guest access: Both lockable rooms have unique keys that lead to the front pool area. Some spaces are shared - There are 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with locks and separate, private entry points. The rest of the house is shared with us two and our dogs, although we keep out of your way so you can enjoy the property. We are one of a few fully legal short-term rentals in Santa Barbara county, which requires owners to remain in the property whilst renting out short term. However, we want to assure you it is our policy to keep out of the way as much as possible to enable you to enjoy the house and grounds to there fullest. Please note we have five lovely small/medium dogs that use the shared spaces, all of whom are well socialized and very friendly. When we are out of the property we will locate them in a private room so they don't give you any surprises (licking to death, mostly) on your return. 5% of the profits (minus cleaning fee and taxes) from your rental fee will be donated to The Old Yeller Ranch Rescue (Los Olivos) for dogs in danger, rescued from in high kill shelters throughout California. Pool and spa are available from 9am to 10pm during your stay. I'm happy to provide eggs (often from our own lovely hens!), toast, coffee (inc decaf), juice for breakfast between 8-9.30am. We are happy for you to be outside (or inside the shared areas) after that though, as long as you aren't too noisy, for the sake of the neighbors. No glass by the pool (we provide plastic cups). Please note, whilst the spa can be heated at no cost all year round, there will be a $50 per day fee to heat the pool between Oct 1st and May 1st paid in cash upon arrival. Please let us know in advance if you wish to have the pool heated on your first day of stay. The area: The five towns of the Santa Ynez Valley (Solvang, Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, Los Alamos and Ballard) are all unique and equally beautiful. They offer many options for entertainment, especially for dining, wine tasting and vineyard visits - we can happily point you in the direction of some of our favorite places to eat and drink! Getting around: Santa Ynez and Solvang are easy five minute drives in opposite directions from the Ranch. Public transportation is limited in the valley but there are occasional bus services that run between the towns. Uber is a great way to get around independently but cell coverage can be patchy, so check with us before relying on it, and there are local taxi companies that specialize in tours to vineyards. We are approximately 40 minutes from Santa Barbara Airport and Los Angeles is about a 2hr 30 mins drive in good traffic.
